Psihodonima, cunoscută și sub denumirea de psihologie dinamică, în sensul său cel mai larg, este o abordare a psihologiei care accentuează studiul sistematic al forțelor psihologice care stau la baza comportamentului uman, a sentimentelor și a emoțiilor și a modului în care s-ar putea referi la experiența timpurie. Este interesat în special de relațiile dinamice dintre motivația conștientă și motivația inconștientă. Termenul psihodinamică este, de asemenea, folosit de unii pentru a se referi în mod specific la abordarea psihanalitică dezvoltată de Sigmund Freud și urmașii săi. Freud a fost inspirat de teoria termodinamicii și a folosit termenul psihodinamică pentru a descrie procesele minții ca fluxuri de energie psihologică într-un creier complex organic. În tratamentul stresului psihologic, psihoterapia psihodinamică tinde să fie o modalitate mai puțin intensă, o dată sau de două ori pe săptămână decât tratamentul psihanalizei clasice Freudian de 3-5 sesiuni pe săptămână. Terapiile psihodinamice depind de o teorie a conflictului interior, în care comportamentele și emoțiile reprimate se află în conștiența pacientului; în general, un conflict este subconștient.
