O plimbare aleatoare este o formalizare matematică a unei căi care constă într-o succesiune de pași aleatorii. De exemplu, traseul urmărit de o moleculă în timp ce călătorește într-un lichid sau gaz, calea de căutare a unui animal furajant, prețul unui stoc fluctuant și statutul financiar al unui jucător pot fi modelate ca plimbări aleatorii, deși poate să nu fie cu adevărat aleatoriu în realitate. Termenul de mers aleator a fost introdus pentru prima dată de Karl Pearson în 1905. Pașii aleatorii au fost folosiți în multe domenii: ecologie, economie, psihologie, informatică, fizică, chimie și biologie. Pașii aleatorii explică comportamentele observate ale multor procese din aceste domenii și, astfel, servesc ca un model fundamental pentru activitatea stochastică înregistrată. Diferite tipuri de plimbări aleatorii sunt de interes. Adesea, se presupune că plimbările aleatorii sunt lanțuri Markov sau procese Markov, dar sunt și alte plimbări mai complicate. Unele plimbări aleatorii sunt pe grafice, altele pe linie, în avion, în dimensiuni mai mari sau chiar pe suprafețe curbe, în timp ce unele plimbări aleatorii sunt grupate. Pașii aleatorii variază și în funcție de parametrul de timp.
