Redshift
În fizică, redshift se întâmplă atunci când lumina sau alte radiații electromagnetice de la un obiect sunt mărită în lungime de undă sau se deplasează la capătul roșu al spectrului. În general, dacă radiația se află în spectrul vizibil, "redder" înseamnă o creștere a lungimii de undă - echivalentă cu o frecvență mai mică și o energie a fotonului mai scăzută, în conformitate cu teoriile valurilor și cuantice ale luminii. Unele schimbări de roșu sunt un exemplu al efectului Doppler, familiar în schimbarea aparentă a sirenelor și frecvența undelor sonore emise de vehiculele accelerate. O schimbare roșie apare ori de câte ori o sursă de lumină se îndepărtează de un observator. Un alt tip de redshift este schimbarea roșie cosmologică, care se datorează expansiunii universului, iar sursele de lumină suficient de îndepărtate prezintă redshift corespunzător ratei de creștere a distanței față de Pământ. În cele din urmă, schimbările roșii gravitaționale sunt un efect relativist observat în radiațiile electromagnetice care se deplasează din câmpurile gravitaționale.
