Reducționismul este o poziție filosofică care susține că un sistem complex nu este altceva decât suma părților sale și că o relatare a acestuia poate fi redusă la conturile constituenților individuali. Acest lucru se poate spune despre obiecte, fenomene, explicații, teorii și semnificații. Reducționismul reflectă puternic o anumită perspectivă asupra cauzalității. Într-un cadru reducționist, fenomenele care pot fi explicate complet în termeni de relații dintre alte fenomene mai fundamentale, se numesc epifenomene. Deseori, există o implicație că epifenomenul nu exercită nicio agenție cauzală asupra fenomenelor fundamentale care o explică.
