În psihologia comportamentală, întărirea este o consecință care va întări comportamentul viitorului unui organism ori de câte ori acest comportament este precedat de un anumit stimul antecedent. Acest efect de întărire poate fi măsurat ca o frecvență mai mare a comportamentului, o durată mai lungă, o magnitudine mai mare sau o latență mai scurtă. Deși în multe cazuri un stimul de întărire este un stimulent plăcut care este "evaluat" sau "plăcut" de către individ, aceasta nu este o cerință. Într-adevăr, întărirea nu necesită nici măcar un individ să perceapă conștient un efect provocat de stimul. Mai mult, stimulii care sunt "recompensați" sau "plăcuți" nu întăresc întotdeauna: dacă un individ mănâncă la un restaurant cu fast-food și îi place gustul mâncării, dar crede că este rău pentru sănătatea sa, astfel nu a fost consolidată în această condiție. Astfel, armarea apare numai dacă există o întărire observabilă a comportamentului. În cele mai multe cazuri, armarea se referă la o îmbunătățire a comportamentului, dar acest termen poate să se refere și la o îmbunătățire a memoriei.
