Masa atomică relativă este o cantitate fizică fără dimensiuni, raportul dintre masa medie a atomilor unui element și 1/12 din masa unui atom de carbon-12. Termenul este echivalent cu greutatea atomică, care este termenul mai vechi și care este, de asemenea, specific de probă. Astfel se așteaptă ca două probe dintr-un element chimic care se găsește în mod natural ca fiind compuse din mai mult de un izotop, colectate din două surse substanțial diferite, să aibă mase atomice relativ puțin diferite, deoarece concentrațiile izotopice variază ușor cu istoricul sursei .
