Un pronume relativ marchează o clauză relativă; are același referent în clauza principală a unei propoziții pe care clauza relativă o modifică. Un exemplu este cuvântul englez care, în propoziția "Aceasta este casa pe care Jack a construit-o", aici pronumele relativ care marchează clauza relativă "pe care Jack a construit-o", care modifică casa substantivului în propoziția principală. Aceasta se referă la casa din clauza principală și leagă două propoziții imaginate "Aceasta este o casă" și "Jack a construit casa", unde casa este aceeași în ambele propoziții. Nu toate instanțele cuvântului care sunt pronume relative. În furnizarea unei legături între o clauză subordonată și o clauză principală, un pronume relativ este similar în funcție de o conjuncție subordonată. Spre deosebire de o conjuncție, totuși, un pronume relativ nu marchează pur și simplu clauza subordonată, ci joacă și rolul unui substantiv în cadrul acestei clauze. De exemplu, în clauza relativă "pe care Jack a construit-o" dată mai sus, pronumele "care" funcționează ca obiect al verbului "construit".
