Teledetecția este obținerea de informații despre un obiect sau fenomen fără a face contact fizic cu obiectul și astfel în contrast cu observarea in situ. În termeni moderni, termenul se referă, în general, la utilizarea tehnologiilor senzorilor aerieni pentru detectarea și clasificarea obiectelor de pe Pământ (atât la suprafață, cât și în atmosferă și oceane) prin intermediul unor semnale propagate (de exemplu, radiații electromagnetice). Poate fi împărțită în teledetecție activă, atunci când un semnal este emis mai întâi de la aeronave sau de la sateliți) sau pasiv (de exemplu, lumina soarelui) când informația este doar înregistrată.
