Rezistivitatea electrică este o proprietate intrinsecă care cuantifică cât de puternic un material dat se opune fluxului de curent electric. O rezistivitate scăzută indică un material care permite cu ușurință mișcarea încărcăturii electrice. Rezistența este reprezentată în mod obișnuit de litera greacă ρ. Unitatea SI de rezistivitate electrică este ohmmetrul, deși alte unități precum ohm⋅centimetre sunt, de asemenea, în uz. De exemplu, dacă un cub solid de 1 m × 1 m × 1 m conține contacte de foi pe două fețe opuse, iar rezistența dintre aceste contacte este 1 Ω, atunci rezistivitatea materialului este 1 Ω⋅m. Conductivitatea electrică sau conductanța specifică reprezintă reciprocitatea rezistivității electrice și măsoară capacitatea unui material de a conduce un curent electric. Acesta este reprezentat în mod obișnuit de litera greacă σ, dar și κ sau γ sunt de asemenea folosite ocazional. Unitatea SI este siemens pe metru, iar unitatea CGSE este a doua.
