Rhizoizii sunt protuberanțe simple, asemănătoare părului, care se extind de la celulele epidermice inferioare ale briofitelor, Rhodophyta și pteridofiților. Ele sunt similare în structura și funcția părului rădăcinii plantelor vasculare. Structuri similare sunt formate din alge și unele ciuperci. Rhizoidele sunt formate din celule unice, în timp ce rădăcinile sunt organe multicelulare, compuse din țesuturi multiple care realizează în mod colectiv o funcție comună. În plus, în stadiile primitive ale dezvoltării plantelor, diferențierea țesuturilor și diviziunea muncii au fost minime, astfel încât nu era necesară cerința pentru țesutul specializat de absorbție a apei. Odată ce plantele au colonizat pământul, totuși, au cerut țesuturilor specializate să absoarbă apa în mod eficient și, de asemenea, să se ancoreze pe pământ. Rhizoizii absoarbe apa prin acțiunea capilară, în care apa se mișcă între firele de rizomide și nu prin fiecare dintre ele, așa cum o face în rădăcini.
