Mecanica rock este o știință teoretică și aplicată a comportamentului mecanic al maselor de rocă și de rocă; în comparație cu geologia, ramura mecanicii se ocupă de răspunsul maselor de rocă și de piatră la câmpurile de forță ale mediului lor fizic. Mecanica rocilor face parte din subiectul mult mai larg al geomecanicii, care se referă la răspunsurile mecanice ale tuturor materialelor geologice, inclusiv la soluri.
