Serotipul sau serovarul se referă la variații distincte în cadrul unei specii de bacterii sau virusuri sau în celulele imunitare ale unor indivizi diferiți. Aceste microorganisme, virusuri sau celule sunt clasificate împreună pe baza antigenelor lor de suprafață celulară, permițând clasificarea epidemiologică a organismelor la nivelul sub-speciei. Un grup de serovari cu antigeni obișnuiți se numește serogrup. Serotipul joacă adesea un rol esențial în determinarea speciilor și a subspecii. Genul de bacterii de Salmonella, de exemplu, a fost determinat să aibă peste 4400 de serotipuri, printre care Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, S. enterica serovar Typhi și S. enterica serovar Dublin. Vibrio cholerae, specia de bacterii care cauzează holeră, are peste 200 de serotipuri, pe baza antigenelor celulare. Doar două dintre ele au fost observate pentru a produce enterotoxina puternică care are ca rezultat holera: 0: 1 și 0: 139. Serotipurile au fost descoperite de microbiologul american Rebecca Lancefield în 1933.
