Îngrijirea partajată implică stabilirea unor parteneriate între profesioniști și laici care au un scop comun. De exemplu: îmbunătățirea stării de sănătate a unui pacient în cazul în care există o responsabilitate a pacientului pentru a-și asuma un grad ridicat de responsabilitate pentru îngrijirea lui sau un aranjament în care viața unei persoane dezavantajate este îmbunătățită prin eforturile comune ale unui serviciu social și un furnizor din afara. Pentru a fi adevărată îngrijire "partajată", parteneriatul este unul cu adevărat egal, fără ca nici un partener să fie subordonat sau superior. Îngrijirea comună este un termen utilizat în mare măsură în domeniul asistenței medicale și asistenței sociale în Marea Britanie.
