Solon
Solon a fost un om politic, atenuator și poet athen. El este amintit în special pentru eforturile sale de a legifera împotriva declinului politic, economic și moral în Atena arhaică. Reformele sale au eșuat pe termen scurt, însă este adesea recunoscut că a pus bazele democrației atenienilor. Cunoașterea lui Solon este limitată de lipsa documentelor documentare și arheologice care acoperă Atena la începutul secolului VI î.Hr. A scris poezie pentru plăcere, ca propagandă patriotică și pentru apărarea reformelor sale constituționale. Lucrările lui doar supraviețuiesc în fragmente. Ele par să prezinte interpolări ale autorilor mai târziu și este posibil ca fragmente să i-i fi fost atribuite în mod greșit. Autorii vechi, cum ar fi Herodot și Plutarh, sunt principala sursă de informație, totuși ei au scris despre Solon mult după moartea sa, într-un moment în care istoria nu era nicidecum o disciplină academică. Actorii din secolul al IV-lea, cum ar fi Aeschines, au avut tendința de a atribui lui Solon toate legile proprii, mult mai târziu.
