Un stelarator este un dispozitiv folosit pentru a limita o plasmă fierbinte cu câmpuri magnetice pentru a susține o reacție de fuziune nucleară controlată. Este unul dintre primele dispozitive de fuziune controlate, inventat de Lyman Spitzer în 1950 și construit anul viitor la ceea ce a devenit mai târziu Laboratorul de Fizică Plasmă din Princeton. Numele se referă la posibilitatea utilizării sursei de energie a soarelui, un obiect stelar. Stellaratoarele au fost populare în anii 1950 și 60, dar rezultatele mult mai bune obținute de designurile tokamak au dus la scăderea lor din favoarea din anii 1970. Mai recent, în anii 1990, problemele cu conceptul tokamak au condus la un interes nou în designul stelarator și au fost construite o serie de dispozitive noi. Unele experimente moderne de stelararator moderne sunt Wendelstein 7-X, în Germania, Experimentul Symmetric Helical din SUA și Dispozitivul Helical Large, în Japonia.
