Shorthand este o metodă abreviată de scriere simbolică care mărește viteza și scurta scriere în comparație cu o metodă normală de scriere a unei limbi. Procesul de scriere în stenogramă se numește stenografie, din stenogramele grecești și graphē sau graphie. De asemenea, el a fost numit brachygraphy, de la brahis și tahygrafie grecească, de la tachisurile grecești, în funcție de compresia sau viteza scrisului. Există multe forme de stenografie.
