În clasificarea biologică, subspecia este fie un rang taxonomic subordonat speciei, fie o unitate taxonomică în acel rang. Un subspeciet nu poate fi recunoscut în mod izolat: o specie fie va fi recunoscută ca având cel puțin nici un subspeci, nici două sau mai multe, niciodată una. Conform Codului Internațional de Nomenclatură Zoologică, subspecia este singurul rang taxonomic sub cel al speciilor care pot primi un nume. În conformitate cu Codul internațional de nomenclatură pentru alge, ciuperci și plante, pot fi numite și alte categorii infraspecifice, cum ar fi varietatea. În bacteriologie, există recomandări, dar nu cerințe stricte pentru recunoașterea altor rânduri infraspecifice importante. Un taxonomist decide dacă să recunoască subspecii sau nu. O modalitate comună de a decide este că organismele aparținând diferitelor subspecii ale aceleiași specii sunt capabile să intervină și să producă urmași fertili, dar nu se încrucișă în natură din cauza izolației geografice sau a altor factori. Diferențele dintre subspecii sunt de obicei mai puțin distincte decât diferențele dintre specii.
