Sati (practică)
Sati se referă la o practică funerară în cadrul unor comunități asiatice în care o femeie recent văduvă se imbolnăvește, de obicei pe piramida funerară a soțului. Menționarea practicii poate fi datată din secolul al IV-lea î.en. În timp ce dovezile de practică apar doar în secolele 5-9, CE. Se consideră că practica a fost provocată de aristocrația războinică a subcontinentului indian, câștigând treptat în popularitate din secolul al X-lea CE altor grupuri și devenind, în general, sancționată / recomandată de doctrinele din secolul al XII-lea CE. Odată cu extinderea militară în afara subcontinentului indian, practica a fost atestată ca practicată în mai multe localități din Asia de Sud-Est, cum ar fi la Bali, în actuala Indonezia. Practica a fost scoasă în afara legii de către britanicul Raj în 1829 pe teritoriul lor din India, urmată de legi în aceleași direcții de către autoritățile din statele principale ale Indiei în deceniile următoare, cu o interdicție generală pentru întreaga India eliberată de Regina Victoria în 1861. În Nepal, sati nu a fost desființată ca practică legalizată până în 1920.
