Motorul sincron
Un motor electric sincron este un motor de curent alternativ în care, la starea de echilibru, rotația arborelui este sincronizată cu frecvența curentului de alimentare; perioada de rotație este exact egală cu un număr integrat de cicluri AC. Motoarele sincrone conțin electromagneți pe statorul motorului care creează un câmp magnetic care se rotește în timp cu oscilațiile curentului de linie. Rotorul se transformă în pas cu acest câmp, la aceeași rată. Motorul sincron și motorul de inducție sunt cele mai utilizate tipuri de motoare de curent alternativ. Diferența dintre cele două tipuri este că motorul sincron se rotește în sincronizare exactă cu frecvența liniei. În contrast, motorul de inducție necesită "alunecare", rotorul trebuie să se rotească ușor mai încet decât alternanțele curentului de curent alternativ, pentru a dezvolta cuplu. Prin urmare, motoarele sincrone mici sunt utilizate în aplicațiile de sincronizare, cum ar fi ceasurile sincrone, temporizatoarele în aparate, înregistratoarele și servomecanismele de precizie în care motorul trebuie să funcționeze la o viteză precisă. Motoarele sincrone sunt disponibile în dimensiuni sub-fracționare auto-excitate la dimensiuni industriale de mare putere.
