Rotorul coada este un rotor mai mic montat astfel încât să se rotească vertical sau aproape vertical la capătul coastei unui elicopter tradițional cu un singur rotor. Poziția rotorului coada și distanța față de centrul de greutate îi permit să dezvolte tracțiune în aceeași direcție ca și rotația rotorului principal, pentru a contracara efectul de cuplu creat de rotorul principal. Coada roții este mai simplă decât rotoarele principale, deoarece acestea necesită doar schimbări colective în pitch pentru a varia forța de tracțiune.
