Rezistența maximă la tracțiune (UTS), adesea redusă până la rezistența la tracțiune (TS) sau rezistența maximă, reprezintă efortul maxim pe care un material îl poate rezista în timp ce se întinde sau trage înainte de a se defecta sau de a se rupe. Rezistența la întindere nu este aceeași cu rezistența la compresiune, iar valorile pot fi destul de diferite. Unele materiale se vor rupe brusc, fără deformare plastică, în ceea ce se numește un eșec fragil. Altele, care sunt mai ductile, inclusiv cele mai multe metale, vor experimenta o anumita deformare plastica si, eventual, unghiile inainte de fractura. UTS se găsește de obicei prin efectuarea unui test de tracțiune și prin înregistrarea stresului ingineriei în raport cu tulpina. Punctul cel mai înalt al curbei de solicitare-deplasare (a se vedea punctul 1 cu privire la stresul de inginerie / diagrame de tulpină de mai jos) este UTS. Este o proprietate intensivă; prin urmare, valoarea sa nu depinde de mărimea specimenului de testare. Cu toate acestea, aceasta depinde de alți factori, cum ar fi prepararea specimenului, prezența sau altfel a defectelor de suprafață și temperatura mediului de testare și a materialului. Rezistența la întindere este foarte rar utilizată în proiectarea elementelor ductile, dar acestea sunt importante în cazul membrilor friabile.
