Tensorii sunt obiecte geometrice care descriu relațiile liniare între vectori, scalare și alte tensori. Exemplele elementare ale unor astfel de relații includ produsul dot, produsul încrucișat și hărțile liniare. Vectorii și scalarii înșiși sunt, de asemenea, tensori. Un tensor poate fi reprezentat ca o serie multidimensională de valori numerice. Ordinea unui tensor este dimensionalitatea matricei necesare pentru ao reprezenta, sau echivalent cu numărul de indici necesari pentru etichetarea unei componente a matricei respective. De exemplu, o hartă liniară poate fi reprezentată de o matrice și, prin urmare, este un tensor de ordinul 2. Un vector poate fi reprezentat ca o matrice bidimensională și este un tensor de ordinul I. Scalarele sunt numere unice și sunt deci tensori din ordinul 0. Tensorii sunt utilizați pentru a reprezenta corespondența între seturile de vectori geometrici. De exemplu, tensorul T de tensiune Cauchy ia o direcție v ca intrare și produce tensiunea T pe suprafața normală la acest vector pentru ieșire exprimând astfel o relație între acești doi vectori, prezentată în figură.
