În chimia organică, un tiol este un compus organosulf, care conține o grupare sulfhidril legată la carbon. Tiolii sunt analogii de sulf ai alcoolilor, iar cuvântul este un portmanteau de "thion" + "alcool", cu primul cuvânt derivat din grecul θείαν = "sulf". Gruparea funcțională -SH în sine este denumită fie o grupare tiol, fie o grupare sulfhidril. Mulți thioli au mirosuri puternice asemănătoare cu cea a usturoiului. Tiolii sunt folosiți ca odoranți pentru a ajuta la detectarea gazelor naturale, iar "mirosul de gaze naturale" se datorează mirosului de tiol utilizat ca miros. Tiolii sunt adesea denumiți mercaptani. Termenul mercaptan / mərkæptæn / este derivat din mercuriul latin captans, deoarece grupul tiolate se leagă atât de puternic cu compușii de mercur. Tiolii reacționează cu mercurul pentru a forma mercaptide.
