Uniformitarismul este presupunerea că aceleași legi și procese naturale care operează în univers au lucrat întotdeauna în univers în trecut și s-au aplicat peste tot în univers. Ea a inclus conceptul gradualist că "prezentul este cheia trecutului" și funcționează la aceleași rate. Uniformitarismul creat de William Whewell a fost inițial propus spre deosebire de catastrofele naturaliștilor britanici de la sfârșitul secolului al XVIII-lea, pornind de la lucrarea geologului scoțian James Hutton, rafinat de John Playfair și popularizat de principiile de geologie ale lui Charles Lyell în 1830 .
