V-chip
V-chip este un termen generic pentru tehnologia utilizată în receptoarele de televiziune din Canada, Brazilia și SUA, care permite blocarea programelor pe baza categoriei lor de rating. Este destinat utilizării de către părinți pentru a gestiona vizionarea televizată a copiilor lor. Televizoarele fabricate pentru piața din Statele Unite din 1999 și toate unitățile din ianuarie 2000 trebuie să aibă tehnologia V-chip. Ideea de blocare a programelor în acest mod a fost brevetată de Brett West și John P. Gardner în 1994 și testată în Canada. De atunci, multe dispozitive care utilizează tehnologia V-chip au fost produse. Tehnologia V-chip funcționează la fel ca și subtitrările închise și utilizează intervalul de interpolare verticală în semnalul de televiziune. Sistemul primește un cod special în semnalul de difuzare care indică scorul spectacolului în conformitate cu un sistem numeric simplu de rating pentru violență, sex și limbă. Semnalele programelor sunt codificate în funcție de nota lor, pe linia 21 a intervalului de interpolare verticală a semnalului difuzat utilizând protocolul XDS, iar acest lucru este detectat de chip-ul V-ului televizorului.
