Înainte de apariția DVD-urilor și a discurilor Blu-ray, CD-ul video a devenit primul format pentru distribuirea filmelor pe discuri optice standard de 120 mm. Formatul este un format digital standard pentru stocarea video pe un disc compact. VCD-urile pot fi redate în playere dedicate VCD, majoritatea discurilor DVD și Blu-ray, computere personale și unele console de jocuri video. Standardul VCD a fost creat în 1993 de Sony, Philips, Matsushita și JVC și este denumit standardul Cartea albă.
