Feminismul este o teorie socială profund înrădăcinată în opresiunea rasială și de gen a femeilor negre. Există interpretări diferite cu privire la ceea ce înseamnă termenul de femeie și eforturile de a oferi o definiție concisă și cuprinzătoare au fost doar marginal de succes. Ambiguitatea în cadrul teoriei permite extinderea continuă a principiilor sale fundamentale. În esența sa, femeia este o perspectivă de schimbare socială bazată pe problemele și experiențele de zi cu zi ale femeilor negre și ale altor femei de culoare, dar caută în general metode de eradicare a inegalităților nu numai pentru femeile negre, ci și pentru toți oamenii. Spiritul autoactiv al activismului, al spiritualității și al relației femeilor cu ea însăși, cu alte femei și cu împrejurimile ei, constituie o parte esențială a ideologiei. Termenul "femeie" a fost inventat pentru prima dată de autorul Alice Walker în povestea ei din 1979, "Coming Apart". Aici Walker descrie protagonistul acestei povesti ca femeie. Deși Walker este creditat pentru acest termen, există alți contribuitori la mișcarea femeii. Acești contribuabili au dezvoltat propriile lor teorii femeiești, independent de femeia lui Walker.
