Funcția de lucru
În fizica solidă, funcția de lucru este lucrarea minimă termodinamică necesară pentru a îndepărta un electron dintr-un solid într-un punct din vid imediat în afara suprafeței solide. Aici "imediat" înseamnă că poziția electronului final este departe de suprafață pe scara atomică, dar încă prea aproape de solidul care trebuie să fie influențat de câmpurile electrice ambientale din vid. Funcția de lucru nu este o caracteristică a unui material vrac, ci mai degrabă o proprietate a suprafeței materialului.
