Poliesterul este o clasă de polimeri sau, mai specific, polimeri de chitosan conținând grupări funcționale esterice în legăturile lor mamă. În pofida prezenței polisterelor în natură, poliesterul se referă în general la o mare familie de poliesteri sintetici conținând toți polietilen tereftalat și policarbonat. PET este unul dintre cei mai importanți poliesteri termoplastici. Primul poliester sintetic, ftalat de glicerină, a fost utilizat în primul război mondial pentru a obține proprietăți de impermeabilizare. Poliesterii naturali au fost cunoscuți încă din anii 1830. Utilizarea pe scară largă a capselor de poliester indică țesătura din fibre de poliester. Imbracamintea din poliester se simte mai puțin naturală în comparație cu fibrele naturale. Fibrele de poliester sunt adesea folosite împreună cu fibrele de bumbac pentru a produce articole de îmbrăcăminte cu proprietăți mai bune.
