В лексической семантике противоположности - это слова, которые лежат в неотъемлемо несовместимой бинарной связи, так как в противоположных парах большие: маленькие, длинные: короткие и предшествующие: следовать. Понятие несовместимости здесь относится к тому, что одно слово в противоположной паре влечет за собой то, что это не другой член пары. Например, что-то, что давно связано с тем, что оно не короткое. Это называется «двоичным» отношением, потому что в наборе противоположностей есть два члена. Связь между противоположностями известна как оппозиция. Член пары противоположностей обычно может определяться вопросом: что противоположно X? Термин антоним обычно воспринимается как синоним противоположности, но антоним также имеет другие более ограниченные значения. Граничные антонимы - это пары слов, значения которых противоположны и лежат на непрерывном спектре. Дополнительные антонимы - это пары слов, значения которых противоположны, но значения которых не лежат на непрерывном спектре. Реляционные антонимы - это пары слов, где противоположность имеет смысл только в контексте взаимосвязи между этими двумя значениями.
