Автоионизация - это процесс, при котором атомы или молекулы спонтанно излучают один из электронов оболочки, переходя из состояния с зарядом Z в состояние с зарядом Z + 1, например, из электрически нейтрального состояния в одноионизированное состояние. Атомы могут автоионизоваться при возбуждении двух или более валентных электронов или отсутствовать один или несколько электронов внутренней оболочки. В последнем случае он называется эффектом Оже. Молекулы, кроме того, могут испытывать вибрационную автоионизацию. Автоионизационные состояния обычно кратковременны и поэтому могут быть описаны как резонансы, а не нормальные связанные состояния.
