В фармакологии биодоступность является подкатегорией абсорбции и представляет собой долю вводимой дозы неизмененного лекарственного средства, которая достигает системного кровообращения, одного из основных фармакокинетических свойств лекарств. По определению, когда лекарство вводится внутривенно, его биодоступность составляет 100%. Однако, когда лекарство вводится по другим маршрутам, его биодоступность в целом уменьшается или может варьироваться от пациента к пациенту. Биодоступность является одним из основных инструментов фармакокинетики, так как биодоступность должна учитываться при расчете дозировок для внутривенных путей введения. Для пищевых добавок, трав и других питательных веществ, в которых путь введения почти всегда оральный, биодоступность обычно обозначает просто количество или долю поглощенной дозы, которая поглощается. Биодоступность определяется немного по-разному для лекарств, а не для диетических добавок, в основном из-за метода введения и регулирования пищевых продуктов и медикаментов.
