Продольная трещина разделяет мозг человека на два отдельных полушария головного мозга, связанных мозолистым корпусом. Полусферы проявляют сильную, но не полную, двустороннюю симметрию как по структуре, так и по функциям. Например, структурно боковая борозда, как правило, длиннее в левом полушарии, чем в правом полушарии, и функционально область Броки и область Вернике расположены в левом полушарии мозга около 95% правша, но около 70% левши. Широкие обобщения часто делаются в популярной психологии с одной стороны или другой, имеющей характерные метки, такие как «логические» для левой стороны или «креативные» для права. Эти метки не поддерживаются исследованиями по латерализации, так как латерализация не добавляет специализированного использования из любого полушария. Оба полушария способствуют обоим видам процессов, а экспериментальные данные мало помогают сопоставить структурные различия между сторонами с такими широко определенными функциональными различиями.
