В социологии отвращение описывает действия или поведение, которые нарушают социальные нормы, в том числе официально принятые правила, а также неформальные нарушения социальных норм. Социологи, психологи, психиатры и криминалисты изучают, как эти нормы создаются, как они меняются со временем и как они применяются. Рассматривая отклонение как нарушение социальных норм, социологи охарактеризовали его как «любую мысль, чувство или действие, которые члены социальной группы считают нарушением их ценностей или правил» или групповое поведение, которое нарушает определения соответствующих и несоответствующее поведение, разделяемое членами социальной системы.
