В векторном исчислении расходимость является векторным оператором, который измеряет величину источника или поглотителя векторного поля в данной точке в терминах подписанного скаляра. Более технически расходимость представляет объемную плотность внешнего потока векторного поля из бесконечно малого объема вокруг данной точки. Например, рассмотрите воздух, когда он нагревается или охлаждается. Соответствующим векторным полем для этого примера является скорость движения воздуха в точке. Если воздух нагревается в области, он будет расширяться во всех направлениях, так что поле скоростей будет направлена наружу от этой области.
