Сфероид или эллипсоид вращения представляют собой квадрическую поверхность, полученную вращением эллипса вокруг одной из ее главных осей; другими словами, эллипсоид с двумя равными полудиаметрами. Если эллипс вращается вокруг своей главной оси, результатом является вытянутый сфероид, например, американский футбол или мяч для регби. Если эллипс вращается вокруг его вспомогательной оси, результатом будет сплющенный сфероид, как чечевица. Если генерирующий эллипс представляет собой круг, результатом является сфера. Из-за комбинированных эффектов гравитации и вращения форма Земли примерно равна форме шара, слегка сплющенного в направлении его оси. По этой причине в картографии Земля часто аппроксимируется сплющенным сфероидом вместо сферы. В текущей модели Мировой геодезической системы используется сфероид, радиус которого составляет 6 378,137 км на экваторе и 6 356,752 км на полюсах. Первоначально слово сфероид означало приблизительно сферическое тело, и именно так оно используется в некоторых старых документах на геодезии. Чтобы избежать путаницы, сфероид следует определять как эллипсоид вращения, если это намеченный смысл.
