An ephor was a governmental official, most notably in Sparta but also in some
smaller Dorian states. The name “ephor” meant “overseer” or perhaps “guardian.”
In Taras and Cyrene there were three ephors, each linked with a Dorian tribe.
Third, that it was by the authority of the eponymous ephor that the intercalation
was made is a fair inference to draw. If the year was named after him, then it is
natural to suppose that it was on his responsibility that the month was added.
