Факторный анализ - статистический метод, используемый для описания изменчивости среди наблюдаемых коррелированных переменных в терминах потенциально меньшего числа ненаблюдаемых переменных, называемых факторами. Например, возможно, что вариации четырех наблюдаемых переменных в основном отражают вариации двух ненаблюдаемых переменных. Факторный анализ ищет такие совместные изменения в ответ на ненаблюдаемые скрытые переменные. Наблюдаемые переменные моделируются как линейные комбинации потенциальных факторов, а также термины «ошибка». Информация, полученная о взаимозависимости между наблюдаемыми переменными, может быть использована позже, чтобы уменьшить набор переменных в наборе данных. Вычислительно эта методика эквивалентна аппроксимации малого ранга матрицы наблюдаемых переменных. Факторный анализ возник в психометрии и используется в поведенческих науках, социальных науках, маркетинге, управлении продуктами, исследованиях операций и других прикладных науках, которые занимаются большим количеством данных. Факторный анализ связан с анализом основных компонентов, но оба они не идентичны.
