Хаттериты являются общинной ветвью анабаптистов, которые, подобно амишам и меннонитам, прослеживают свои корни в Радикальной Реформации XVI века. После смерти своего однофамильца Якоба Хаттера в 1536 году верования хуттеритов, особенно живущие в общности товаров и абсолютный пацифизм, привели к сотням лет диаспоры во многих странах. Почти исчезнув к 18-м и 19-м векам, хуттериты нашли новый дом в Северной Америке. За 125 лет их население выросло с 400 до 42 000 человек.
