Кетоновые тела представляют собой три водорастворимые биохимические вещества, которые вырабатываются печенью из жирных кислот в периоды низкого потребления пищи или ограничения углеводов для клеток организма, которые используются в качестве энергии вместо глюкозы. Два из трех используются как источник энергии в сердце и головном мозге, а третий - продукт распада разложения ацетоуксусной кислоты. Радиоактивное отслеживание ацетона определяет, что от 2% до 30% выводится из организма. Кетоновые тела подбираются клетками и превращаются обратно в ацетил-СоА, который затем входит в цикл лимонной кислоты и электронную транспортную цепь для получения энергии. В головном мозге кетоновые тела также используются для превращения ацетил-СоА в жирные кислоты с длинной цепью, потому что жирные кислоты с длинной цепью не могут проходить через гематоэнцефалический барьер. Печень разрушает белок, чтобы продуцировать глюкозу во время голодания для очень немногих клеток, связанных с глюкозой, которые не могут использовать кетоновые тела. В мозге кетоновые тела являются жизненно важным источником энергии во время голодания или напряженных упражнений. Хотя они называются «телами», они являются молекулами, а не частицами.
