Исследователи из искусственного интеллекта впервые разработали системы на основе знаний. Эти ранние системы, основанные на знаниях, были в первую очередь экспертными системами. Фактически этот термин часто используется синонимом с экспертными системами. Разница заключается в представлении, которое описывается системой. Экспертная система относится к типу задачи, которую система пытается решить, заменить или помочь специалисту-человеку в сложной задаче.
