У позвоночных, челюсть, нижняя челюсть или челюстная кость - это кость, образующая череп с черепом. В лепестковых рыбах и ранних ископаемых четвероногих кость, гомологичная нижней челюсти млекопитающих, является лишь самой большой из нескольких костей нижней челюсти. У таких животных он упоминается как зубная кость и образует тело наружной поверхности челюсти. Это граничит ниже рядом селезеночных костей, а угол челюсти образован нижней угловой костью и надголовой костью чуть выше нее. Внутренняя поверхность челюсти выровнена с помощью первичной кости, а суставная кость образует сочленение с собственно черепом. Наконец, набор из трех узких короноидных костей лежит над предсуставной костью. Как следует из названия, большинство зубов прикреплены к зубному дереву, но обычно есть зубы на коронных костях, а иногда и на первичном. Однако этот сложный примитивный паттерн был в значительной степени упрощен в подавляющем большинстве позвоночных животных, так как кости либо слились, либо полностью исчезли.
