В математике многообразие является топологическим пространством, напоминающим евклидово пространство вблизи каждой точки. Точнее, каждая точка n-мерного многообразия имеет окрестность, гомеоморфную евклидову пространству размерности n. Линии и круги, но не фигурные восьмерки, являются одномерными многообразиями. Двумерные многообразия называются также поверхностями. Примеры включают плоскость, сферу и тор, которые все могут быть реализованы в трех измерениях, но также бутылка Клейна и реальная проективная плоскость, которая не может. Хотя вблизи каждой точки многообразие напоминает евклидово пространство, глобально многообразие может и не быть. Например, поверхность сферы не является евклидовым пространством, но в области ее можно наметить с помощью географических отображений: проекции карты области в евклидову плоскость. Когда область появляется в двух соседних картах, эти два представления не совпадают точно и необходимо преобразование, чтобы перейти от одного к другому, называемого переходной картой.
