Микробиоом является «экологическое сообщество комменсальных, симбиотических и патогенных микроорганизмов, которые буквально разделяют наше пространство тела». Этот термин был первоначально придуман Джошуа Ледербергом, который утверждал важность микроорганизмов, обитающих в организме человека в области здоровья и болезней. Во многих научных статьях выделяются «микробиомы» и «микробиота» для описания либо коллективных геномов микроорганизмов, обитающих в нише окружающей среды, либо сами микроорганизмы. Однако по оригинальным определениям эти термины в значительной степени являются синонимами. Человеческое тело содержит более чем в 10 раз больше микробных клеток, чем клетки человека, хотя весь микробиом весит всего около 200 граммов, при этом некоторые оценки веса составляют до 3 фунтов. Некоторые считают его «вновь открывшимся органом», поскольку его существование не было общепризнанным до конца 1990-х годов и, как его понимают, потенциально оказывает огромное влияние на здоровье человека. Современные методы секвенирования ДНК позволили исследователям найти большинство этих микробов, поскольку большинство из них не могут быть культивированы в лаборатории с использованием современных методов.
