Объективный тест - это психологический тест, который измеряет характеристики индивида, не зависящие от предвзятости ратера или собственных убеждений экзаменатора, обычно путем администрирования банка вопросов, отмеченных и сопоставленных с строгими скоринговыми механизмами, которые полностью стандартизованы, во многом так же, как экзамены вводят. Объективные тесты часто контрастируют с проективными тестами, которые чувствительны к убеждениям ратера или экзаменатора. Проективные тесты основаны на фрейдистской психологии и направлены на то, чтобы разоблачить бессознательное восприятие людей. Объективные тесты, как правило, имеют большую ценность, чем проективные тесты; однако они по-прежнему подчиняются готовности испытуемого быть открытым о своей личности и как таковой иногда могут плохо отражать истинную личность субъекта. Проективные тесты предположительно раскрывают определенные аспекты личности индивидуумов, которые невозможно измерить посредством объективного теста, и гораздо более надежны при выявлении «защищенных» или бессознательных личностных качеств или особенностей.
