Паллиум - церковное облачение в Католической Церкви, первоначально своеобразное для папы, но на протяжении многих веков дарованное им митрополитами и приматами как символ юрисдикции, переданной им Святым Престолом. В этом контексте он остался связанным с папством. Паллиум в его нынешней западной форме представляет собой узкую полосу, «три пальца шириной», сплетенную из шерсти белого ягненка из овец, воздвигнутую монахами из Трапписта, с петлей в центре, покоящейся на плечах над грудью и двумя зависимыми капюшонами, до и после; так что, если смотреть спереди или сзади, орнамент напоминает букву Y. Он украшен шестью черными крестами, по одному на каждый хвост и четыре на петле, удваивается на левом плече и иногда украшен, сзади и спереди, с тремя драгоценные золотые булавки. Две последние характеристики кажутся пережитками того времени, когда римский паллиум был простым шарфом, удвоенным и закрепленным на левом плече. По происхождению паллиум и омофор - одно и то же облачение. Омофор - это широкая полоса ткани, намного большая, чем современный паллиум, которую носят все восточно-православные епископы и восточно-католические епископы Византийского обряда.
