Фосфоресценция является специфическим типом фотолюминесценции, связанной с флуоресценцией. В отличие от флуоресценции, фосфоресцирующий материал не сразу переизлучает излучение, которое он поглощает. Более медленные временные масштабы переизлучения связаны с «запрещенными» переходами энергетического состояния в квантовой механике. Поскольку эти переходы происходят очень медленно в некоторых материалах, поглощенное излучение может быть переизлучено с меньшей интенсивностью в течение нескольких часов после первоначального возбуждения.
