Готфрид Семпер «Четыре элемента архитектуры» полагал, что плинтус, очаг, крыша и стена составляют всю архитектурную теорию. Плинтус обычно лежит прямо на земле, или «стилобат». По словам Семпера, существует плинтус для ведения переговоров между структурой и землей. Теория Земпера оказала влияние на развитие архитектуры. Многие дома в подверженных наводнениям сельских районах Бангладеш построены на плинтусах. Слово также используется для основания шкафа или звукового проигрывателя. В инженерной технике плотины «цоколь» является связующим звеном между землей и плотиной. Для случая арочных дамб термин меняется на «пульвино».
