Группа крови группы Rh является одной из тридцати трех действующих систем крови человека. Это самая важная система группы крови после ABO. В настоящее время система группы крови Rh состоит из 50 определенных антигенов группы крови, среди которых наиболее важны пять антигенов D, C, c, E и e. Обычно используемые термины Rh-фактор, Rh-положительный и отрицательный Rh относятся только к антигену D. Помимо своей роли в переливании крови, система крови Rh группы, в частности, антиген D, используется для определения риска гемолитического заболевания новорожденного, поскольку профилактика является наилучшим подходом к управлению этим состоянием. В рамках пренатальной помощи анализ крови может быть использован для определения типа крови плода. Если Rh-антиген отсутствует, кровь называется резус-отрицательной. Если присутствует антиген, он называется Rh-положительным. Когда мать резус-отрицательна, а отец резус-положителен, плод может наследовать резус-фактор от отца. Это также делает резус-положительный плод. Проблемы могут возникнуть, когда кровь плода имеет резус-фактор, а материнская кровь - нет. Мать с резус-отрицательным вырабатывает антитела к резус-положительному ребенку.
