Суматра, остров в западной части Индонезии и часть островов Сунда. Это самый большой остров, который полностью находится в Индонезии и шестой по величине остров в мире на 480 847,74 км2, с текущим населением более 50 миллионов человек. Его самым большим городом является Медан с более чем 4 миллионами в своей столичной области. Суматра - вытянутая земля, охватывающая диагональную северо-западную юго-восточную ось. На юго-востоке узкий Сундский пролив отделяет Суматру от Явы. Северная оконечность Суматры граничит с Андаманскими островами, а на нижней восточной стороне - острова Бангка и Белитунг, пролив Каримата и Явское море. Букитские барисанские горы, которые содержат несколько действующих вулканов, образуют костяк острова, а северо-восточные стороны - низменности с болотами, мангровыми и сложными речными системами.
